In 2016 (5777) the Festival begins the evening of Saturday, December 24th and runs through December 31th. Candles are lit each night at sunset to "publicize the miracle", starting with one on the first night, and ending with all 8 on the last night. Candles are usually lit from the right to the left (like how we read and write in Hebrew).
We bid a fond farewell to the Sabbath with wine/grape juice, spices and light (6:45 pm). Immediately afterward, we light the first candle of Chanukah.
