Have you seen East Side Story yet? That was the original concept for West Side Story. Did you know there is a Jewish Reindeer on Santa’s sled? Who wrote ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame?’

Jewish Influence on American Popular Music 1880 – 2000 is a series of multimedia presentations given by Allan Cheskes and the Beth Shalom Synagogue of Toronto, Canada. These presentations give a fascinating history of Jews in the United States, Music in the United States, the United States as well as the Jewish Influence on American Popular music.

The series started in 2020 as live presentations at Beth Shalom Synagogue and migrated over to Zoom for the pandemic. We will be showing recordings of the presentations on Tuesday afternoons at 3:00 central time starting October 19th.   The presentations last about an hour and a half.

We are happy to be able to offer these presentations at no charge.

Please press the 'RESISTER' buttom below to select the presentations that you would like to attend. If you have any questions, please contact CHESMA at shalomsanmiguel@gmail.com.  Please note, the original broadcasts of these presentations averaged well over 100 computer participants (I can only hope that we are as successful), but we can only allow 100 computers to access each presentation at one time. If we receive more than 100 requests, we will create a waiting list in the order that the requests were received. Please let CHESMA know if you cannot attend a presentation that you registered for so that your place can be given to somebody else if necessary.

Allan Cheskes is a retired partner from Deloitte and teaches part time at Seneca College. With his extra time, he has developed this course which reflects his passion for music, history and Jews. Since the presentation’s introduction on Zoom, word spread, and the presentations have garnered interest from around the world.

We would like to thank Allan Cheskes and the Beth Shalom Synagogue for giving us permission to present the recorded presentations.
